How to Choose a Dermatologist in Tampa: What to Look For

Tampa Has Choices: Here's How to Pick the Right One

If you live in Tampa or the surrounding area, you're not short on dermatology options. But not all dermatology practices are created equal. Some offer cosmetic treatments only; others are full-service medical, surgical, and cosmetic centers. Some dermatologists are board-certified; others operate in gray areas of regulation. Some have state-of-the-art equipment; others are still using outdated methods.

So how do you find a dermatologist that's actually right for you? Here are the seven key criteria to evaluate and the red flags you should never ignore.

1. Board Certification (FAAD Matters)

Start here. A board-certified dermatologist has completed medical school, dermatology residency training, and passed rigorous board examinations. The credential you're looking for is FAAD: Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

This credential means:

  • The dermatologist has met high standards of medical education and training
  • They're held accountable to ethical and professional standards
  • They stay current on the latest research and techniques through continuing education
  • They have demonstrated expertise across all areas of dermatology: medical, surgical, and cosmetic

Many states don't regulate who can call themselves a "dermatologist." You can find the letters "MD" or "DO" after someone's name on a spa website, but that doesn't mean they have dermatology training. Always verify board certification through the American Board of Dermatology website.

2. Medical Dermatologist vs. Med Spa: Know the Difference

This is a crucial distinction, and many patients don't fully understand it until it's too late.

A medical dermatology practice: Can diagnose skin conditions AND treat them. A dermatologist can evaluate a suspicious mole, determine whether it's melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, or something benign, and perform the appropriate treatment (whether that's a biopsy, surgical removal, or topical medication). They have the full scope of medical knowledge to handle complications and medical skin diseases.

A med spa: Offers cosmetic procedures only. Estheticians, nurses, or physician assistants (not dermatologists) administer cosmetic treatments. They can provide results, but they cannot diagnose or treat skin diseases. If something concerning comes up during a cosmetic treatment, they often have to refer you elsewhere.

There's nothing wrong with med spas for cosmetic goals, but don't mistake them for comprehensive dermatology care. If you have any skin health concerns, even if you also want cosmetic treatments, you need a medical dermatologist.

3. Range of Services Under One Roof

The best dermatology practices offer medical, surgical, and cosmetic services in one place. Why? Because your skin care needs are interconnected.

You might come in for a skin cancer screening and have a basal cell carcinoma removed. Then you might want to address sun damage with chemical peels or microneedling. Later, you might pursue other cosmetic treatments. You want one dermatologist who knows your full skin history and can coordinate all of these needs.

A practice with medical, surgical, and cosmetic capabilities means you're not bouncing between different providers and having to repeat your history.

4. Insurance Acceptance

Medical dermatology (like skin cancer screening, treatment of eczema, acne, and other conditions) should be covered by your insurance. Cosmetic procedures typically are not.

Make sure your dermatologist accepts your insurance for medical visits. And if you're interested in cosmetic procedures, get clear information about pricing and payment options upfront.

Red flag: If a practice doesn't accept insurance but pushes you toward elective procedures, be cautious.

5. Availability for New Patients

A popular dermatology practice is a good sign; it usually means the dermatologist is good. But if they're not accepting new patients for months, you need to find an alternative. Your skin care needs are pressing.

Look for a practice that can get you in within a few weeks for a new patient appointment, and one that communicates clearly about scheduling, so you always know what to expect.

6. Reviews and Reputation

Read reviews on Google, Yelp, and RealSelf (if the practice does cosmetic work). Pay attention to patterns in feedback:

  • Do patients feel heard and valued?
  • Is the dermatologist knowledgeable and thorough?
  • Are staff members friendly and professional?
  • Is the office clean and well-organized?
  • Do patients report realistic results and no pressure tactics?

A couple of negative reviews in a sea of positive ones is normal. But if you see patterns of complaints about being rushed, pressured to buy packages, or poor results, move on.

7. Location and Convenience

This matters more than you might think. If your dermatologist is 45 minutes away, you're more likely to skip your annual skin check or delay addressing concerns. Look for a practice that's convenient to your home or work.

Red Flags to Never Ignore

  • No board certification: Non-negotiable. Always verify FAAD credentials.
  • Pressure to buy packages: Legitimate dermatologists treat you based on your needs, not quota.
  • No medical evaluation before cosmetic procedures: Ethical practices always assess your skin and health before any treatment.
  • Unwillingness to discuss risks and alternatives: Your dermatologist should educate you, not just sell you.
